Minecraft PE 1.17

At the annual Minecraft Live 2020 event, the developers announced a major update called "Caves & Cliffs." In this article, we cover what made it into Minecraft 1.17 and where to download the update. All the major additions are described below.

Glow Squid

• A new mob that won the vote at Minecraft Live 2020.
• Spawns in deep water and glows in the dark.
• Drops Glow Ink Sacs when killed.

Glow Ink Sacs

• Used to craft Glow Item Frames, which light up items in the dark.
• Can also be used to make sign text glow.

New mountain generation

• At Minecon Live 2019, the developers put three biomes to a vote (badlands, swamp, and mountains) - mountains won.
• The mountain update brought new mountain generation and Goats to the game.
• Important: full new mountain generation and the snowy mountain biomes only arrived with the second part of "Caves & Cliffs" in 1.18, not in 1.17.

Goats

• Appear in mountain biomes and can jump high to clear obstacles.
• Can attack other creatures and knock them off cliffs with their ram.

New cave generation

• The cave generation system was completely reworked, making caves much larger.
• Whole systems of underground lakes and rivers now appear.
• Important: the increased world height and the fully reworked underground generation arrived in 1.18 - 1.17 added the cave biomes and blocks themselves.

Lush Caves

• Generate beneath Azalea trees.
• They grow a variety of new vegetation, and Glow Berries can be found here.

Dripstone Caves

• Made up of stalactite and stalagmite blocks.
• Stalactites can fall and, unlike sand and gravel, break in the process.
• If a creature falls onto a stalagmite, it takes damage.

Amethyst Geodes

• Underground structures where amethyst crystals and amethyst blocks generate.
• Amethyst Shards are used to craft the Spyglass and Tinted Glass.

Copper

• A new resource obtained by smelting copper ore in a furnace.
• Copper crafts into new blocks: copper blocks, stairs, and slabs.
• Over time and with exposure to weather, copper blocks oxidize, and waxing them with honeycomb stops the oxidation.

Spyglass

• Crafted from copper and Amethyst Shards, it lets you view distant objects.
• It makes it easier to spot dangers, find structures, and locate your home.

Lightning Rod

• Attracts lightning strikes to itself, helping to prevent fires from strikes hitting a build.
• Crafted from copper ingots.

Axolotl

• Lives in Lush Caves and comes in several colors.
• When it takes damage, it can play dead to recover health.
• Peaceful toward the player, but attacks Drowned, Guardians, Elder Guardians, and fish.
• Axolotls can be scooped up with a bucket and befriended - they help in underwater combat.

Sculk Sensor

• A block that vibrates when it picks up sounds around it.
• Used to build wireless Redstone contraptions.
• Generates in Ancient Cities; the Sculk biome itself and the Warden arrived later, in 1.19 "The Wild Update."

How to download MCPE 1.17?

• The release happened on June 8, 2021.
• Only part of the planned content made it into 1.17: copper, amethyst, glow squid, axolotls, the spyglass, the lightning rod, dripstone, and Lush Caves.
• The rest - the new mountain and cave generation and the snowy biomes - arrived with the second part of "Caves & Cliffs" in 1.18 at the end of 2021.
